Facts about sponges
* There are 5,000 different species of sponges. 1765 sponges were thought to be plants. Sponges can contain 16,000 animals inside of it. Finally, a new type of sponge is found every year.
* To prevent other sponges from attacking them, sponges can produce chemicals to keep other sponges cells from growing. These chemicals are being used to find a cure for cancer and other diseases.
* When a part of a sponge breaks off, a new sponge will form.
* Sponges do not have organs, instead they are made up of special cells that carry out all the processes.

Digestive system
* Sponges are sessile so they cannot pursue their food. Their bodies are covered with pores and canals through which water passes. The water moves in and out by the beating of flagella which are parts of choanocytes or collar cells. Cells in the sponges wall capture food that is brought in by the movement of the collar cells. The food is taken in by the process of phagocytosis and each individual cell digests the food. Phagocytosis is the process by which certain living cells called phagocytes ingest or engulf other cells or particles. Finally, a sponge relies on water flow to enter and leave its orifice. This is how it removes waste , the pressure of the water current takes away the waste.
